Opalis Describes Top Three Reasons for ITIL Implementation Failures at Pink Elephant ITIL Case Studies Symposium

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Opalis Software, Inc., the expert provider of enterprise infrastructure software that enables the integration and automation of data center operations, announced its top three reasons for Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) initiative failures today at the Pink Elephant ITIL Case Studies Symposium. Opalis is exhibiting its enterprise data center integration and automation technology at booth #3. Additionally, the company will be co-presenting an IT Infrastructure Management Track case study with Schenker, one of the world's leading providers of integrated logistics services, on implementing ITIL as a framework for driving IT business efficiency on Tuesday, August 23, 2005. The session is titled, "Taking the Pain -- And the People -- Out of Nightly Maintenance."

Demystifying ITIL Initiative Failures

After years of early skepticism, most in the industry would agree that ITIL is going mainstream. Dozens and dozens of enterprises, many with European roots, have already gone through an ITIL implementation -- some successful, many not. Enterprises need to approach ITIL initiatives with past lessons learned and do all they can up front to ensure its customer service capability and governance are ready to deliver from day one. Based on lessons learned from Opalis' worldwide customer base, the company offers its top three reasons for ITIL initiative failures:

Reason #1: Human Weak Link Failure -- It is impractical to assume that humans will follow the rules described in ITIL methodologies to a tee. To be successful, enterprises need to remove humans from the process as much as possible and instead rely on automation technologies to better chances of repeatability and consistency.

Reason #2: Process Definition Scope Creep -- Oftentimes, enterprises do not put enough thought into the constraints of the definition of processes they want to document and enforce, rather it becomes a "what should we do" exercise versus a "what do we need to do" exercise.

Reason #3: "ITIL is the Answer" Failure -- IT personnel often fail to market their ITIL project as a way to drive both internal efficiency and service levels, and try to use the ITIL label as the main message. ITIL projects are costly, therefore, IT staff need to be able to demonstrate up front how it will fortify core business processes and make them more reliable. This demonstration will avoid lost budgets or abandoned projects part way through an ITIL implementation.

"ITIL is here to stay," says Opalis President and CEO Scott Broder. "Enterprises can expect enormous benefits from an ITIL implementation, if done properly. Our customer, Schenker, is a great example -- key to its success was the early integration and automation of its core business processes. Opalis has helped numerous companies achieve the goal of IT efficiency through process integration and automation."

Where many organizations get into trouble, however, is that they try to have a broad and deep knowledge in each of these areas. This is a huge blow to an organization's productivity. By automating or outsourcing some of these pieces, such as databases, infrastructure, and networks, your team can instead focus on development, testing, and deployment. Further, organizations that focus their attention on these areas can eventually move to a test-driven development structure that condenses several l...

Never mind that we might not know what the future holds for cryptocurrencies and how much values will fluctuate or even how the process of mining a coin could cost as much as the value of the coin itself - cryptocurrency mining is a hot industry and shows no signs of slowing down. However, energy consumption to mine cryptocurrency is one of the biggest issues facing this industry. Burning huge amounts of electricity isn't incidental to cryptocurrency, it's basically embedded in the core of "mini...
