When I was 17 and trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up, chief marketing technology officer was 334th on my list, only 333 spots removed from my top choice, game show host. Nonetheless, I was surprised when, after Sajak, Dawson and Trebek turned down the gig, Right Source Marketing put me in charge of marketing technology a few weeks ago. I’ve never considered myself a techie, but here I sit, with the rise of technology and data having forever shifted the role of the modern marketer. Just when marketing had become cool again, we’ve gone ahead and crashed the technology party – a place that used to be reserved for geeks and nerds. Why? The reason is simple – the marketing seat at the boardroom table is getting closer and closer to the CEO seat because marketing is no longer viewed as a cost center but rather a revenue driver. As marketers, if we can ... (more)

Broken VCs Aftermath

Venture Capital Blog on Ulitzer Apparently (apparently!), I have said something that hit a nerve.  When I posted my thoughts on the whole issues as to whether or not the VC model was broken, I had no idea that it would be the most popular post I have ever written (and it’s not even noon on day 2).  Crazy. Predictably, some of my VC friends showed up to the conversation to point out that 1) am angry, and 2) that the “good” VCs don’t have associates.  First, I am not angry.  It’s easy for the VCs and their ilk to cast those aspersions, but the reality is that they have a fantastic business model, and they are going to fight to the death to protect it.  Second, the venture firm that completely blew me up at my last company has no associates.  One day I will tell that story, but even firms with only partners can behave badly. I certainly don’t want to over-generalize ... (more)

Publishing Synergy: Blog, Twitter and Ulitzer

Government Cloud on Ulitzer Have you ever been given the task of building and executing an aggressive customer outreach program? Well I received my assignment about a year ago and trust me; the budget was not commensurate with the assigned goal. My particular need was to educate prospective Federal government customers on a new information technology trend. Known as cloud computing, this new approach blends service oriented architecture (SOA), virtualization technologies and a "pay-by-the-use" sales approach into a new IT delivery business model. Although this new approach promised the delivery of better constituent service at a reduced cost, risk adverse Federal agency decision makers needed to know much more before they would even consider cloud computing as an option. During a time of economic collapse and fiscal crisis, competing security, governance and procur... (more)
